"Lone Again (Naturally)" is a vocal by Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan. It was released in 1972 at the aforementioned time as – just non included on – his album Dorsum to Front, and was a popular hit.

The single spent six non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the U.s.a. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, which ranked it as the No. 2 vocal for 1972. In Casey Kasem's American Meridian twoscore of the 1970s, "Alone Again (Naturally)" ranked equally the fifth nearly-popular song of the decade (Debby Boone'southward "Yous Light Upward My Life" was No. 1). Information technology also spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Easy Listening chart,[four] and reached No. 3 on the Great britain Singles Chart.[5] The song is included on O'Sullivan's The Berry Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan album (2004) on the EMI record label. Big Jim Sullivan plays the guitar suspension in the original recorded version of the vocal.

The song was involved in an of import 1991 courtroom case which held that sampling of music – as had been done with O'Sullivan'southward recording – can found copyright infringement.

Lyrics [edit]

"Alone Once more (Naturally)" is a melancholy, introspective ballad. In the first verse, the singer contemplates suicide after having been left "in the lurch at a church"; in the second, he wonders if at that place is a God; finally, he laments the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said the song is not autobiographical: for case, his mother was alive during its composition, and he was not close to his male parent, who was savage to his female parent and died when the vocalist was 11 years quondam.[6]

The song received extensive radio airplay in the months after its release, and was critically praised. O'Sullivan commented that "Neil Diamond covered 'Alone Over again (Naturally)' and said he couldn't believe a 21-year-old wrote it, but for me it was just one song I had written".[7] Neil Sedaka stating when he covered the song in 2022 that he wished that he himself had written the song, because its complexity was more than typical of someone much older than 21.[8]

Copyright lawsuit [edit]

Yard Upright Music, Ltd v. Warner Bros. Records Inc. was a copyright case heard past the The states District Court for the Southern Commune of New York. The example pitted O'Sullivan against Biz Markie subsequently the rapper sampled O'Sullivan'due south song "Alone Again (Naturally)". The court ruled that sampling without permission can be copyright infringement. The judgment changed the hip hop music industry, requiring that music sampling be preapproved by the original copyright owners to avoid a lawsuit.[25]

Maison Ikkoku [edit]

This song and O'Sullivan'south "Get Downwards" were featured as the opening and catastrophe for episode 24 of the popular Japanese anime Maison Ikkoku, based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi. O'Sullivan was signed to production visitor Kitty Picture'due south associated record characterization, Kitty Records, which wanted to use the anime'due south popularity every bit a mode to promote the singer in Japan. According to series manager Kazuo Yamazaki, the songs were dropped after merely one episode because they were unpopular with viewers. They were not included on the English-language American release of the anime, replaced by the previously used Japanese theme songs.

The vocal was also used as the ending theme for the 1986 live-action Maison Ikkoku picture show, Flat Fantasy.

Notable cover versions [edit]

Several artists have covered the vocal. A recording by Andy Williams was the championship track for the U.Southward. release of his album of embrace songs later in 1972. Amid the notable covers are versions by Nina Simone, included as a bonus track on the 1988 digital reissue of her 1982 album Fodder on My Wings; and past Lazlo Blight's frontman Chad Fischer, from the 2009 animated flick Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Both characteristic substantially rewritten lyrics; Simone'south version savagely exhumes her troubled relationship with her late father, whereas Fischer's humorously explores the want of an acorn for the fictional prehistoric squirrel who in one case chased it. In 2015, Diana Krall released a duet version with Michael Bublé on her album Wallflower.[26]
